Bitching About Olympic Heroes and Stupid Olympic Events
So far, the story of the Olympics is Michael Phelps. We know what he eats for breakfast, what size his shoes are, and that he’s double joined in his chest. And all the attention is deserving. I mean, to date, he has won 7 gold medals and he’ll be going for the record breaking 8th gold at a single Olympic Games later in a relay race. But folks, let’s put it in context… HE’S A FREAKING SWIMMER. To put a news headline after his photo finish win in the 100 m butterfly as “heroic” is just plain idiotic. Soldiers are heroic, fire fighters are heroic. You get the picture. How utterly assinine is it to compare a swimming race to the feats of true heroes. I don’t for one second diminish the amazing talent that is Michael Phelps, but put it into perspective.
And while I’m rambling on about the Olympics, I just got a glance at race walking… WTF? This is an OLYMPIC EVENT? Traditional timed events I get like running, swimming or rowing, etc. But in racewalking, it just means you suck at running so you had to make up a bogus event. Why walk when you can run? Yeah, like next time I’m trying to catch a bus, I’m going to racewalk.
